Business Studies Sandwich Degree

Strategic Planning Analyst

To prepare for the graduate programme I researched the Group extensively. I was impressed by the size and scope of The Co-operative Group and the opportunity to take part in a scheme that involved working in many different businesses, markets and functions. I was also impressed by the fact that the Group doesn’t operate like most other businesses. Instead it is accountable to its members, employees and communities - it operates to encourage equality, openness, trust and responsibility.

I had a great time exploring where I might want to work for a career. As part of this exploratory phase I moved between Marketing, HR, Buying, Finance and New Business Development. It was ideal for me as a Business Studies graduate as I acquired experience and skills in most functions of business.

I want to continue to challenge myself by actively seeking projects and opportunities that will enhance my knowledge and skills further, enabling me to progress through the Group. As I do this I’ve found there is an overwhelming amount of support available - professional coach, business mentor, graduate programme manager, support cohorts, learning budget to spend on books and courses, and management development weeks made up of lots more courses, lectures and workshops.

With determination, hard work and resilience there is no limit to what you can achieve. The programme gives you a great platform and the tools to develop, but ultimately it’s you that makes the difference. I’ve tried to learn as much as possible from experts around me, utilise the tools and support I have, and continually push harder to achieve more and progress to senior management level.
